James and Beverly (Rippey) have been married for almost 37 years and enjoy spending time with their family. James is a leader in the Hillsboro Seventh-day Adventist Church and likes to read, travel, and hike in the Pacific Northwest.
After a youthful infatuation with Ralph Nader and the Progressive promise of having smart people make good decisions for everyone, James came to recognize the many unintended consequences of these well-meaning efforts. As he began to understand economics, the role of incentives, and the information problem in a complex society, he came to appreciate the role of freedom in helping to improve outcomes for everyone.
James is Director of Operations for a Beaverton-area software company and has worked for the government, not-for-profit institutions, and various for-profit businesses. As a Staff Attorney for the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., he performed economic and legal analysis of proposed consumer protection cases. Later he worked in private practice helping clients navigate various legal, regulatory, and business issues. More recently he has worked in software engineering and has traveled widely (both nationally and internationally) providing training and consulting services to large and small enterprises. While in school, James worked as a flight instructor and air taxi pilot.
